Cleaning up the world’s battery supply chain with a drop-in solution

The European Parliament’s decision to introduce tougher sustainability and labelling requirements for batteries and electric vehicles could set a benchmark for the entire global battery market.

From 2027, batteries sold in the EU will need a digital battery passport, highlighting and compensating for social and environmental issues in the battery’s supply chain. Electric vehicles (EVs) will carry a compulsory carbon footprint declaration and label.

The new law is in response to citizens’ expectations around energy security, green infrastructure and building a circular economy, the EU Parliament stated.

Other key regions are also acknowledging the importance of transparency in the battery supply chain, including China and the United States, according to the World Economic Forum.

This increased global focus on supply chain due diligence will highlight that graphite anode, comprising up to 50% of the weight of a lithium-ion battery, is one of the leading causes of carbon dioxide emissions in battery production.

At CarbonScape, we are bringing the solution to this dirty battery supply chain problem.

Our sustainable biographite has been specifically engineered as a drop-in replacement to the fossil carbon anodes currently used in lithium-ion batteries. It is the world’s only net negative CO₂ emission anode material.

Made from renewable forestry and timber (lumber) industry byproducts, the patented CarbonScape process can be used anywhere in the world where biomass feedstock is available. In the EU and North America this availability is abundant, immediately localising and decarbonising supply chains for EV and battery makers.

Plans for our large-scale biographite plants are already underway. We are poised now to play a key role in helping battery and EV makers meet new regulatory benchmarks in the global race to decarbonise.
