Decarbonizing US battery supply chains with biographite anode

CarbonScape CEO Ivan Williams was among world-leading carbon negative companies, executives, and industry experts at the Credit Suisse Carbon Negative Conference 2.0 in San Diego. There, he addressed decarbonization of EV supply chains, and much more, with real solutions.

The US administration’s legislative push to create a domestic supply chain for lithium-ion batteries, and meet clean energy and decarbonization goals, has put graphite in the spotlight.

No American EV manufacturer can claim a local supply chain for battery anode. Graphite, which is not produced in the US but comprises 25% to 30% of a lithium-ion battery, is a particular sticking point.

As one of several critical minerals for EV batteries targeted for increased domestic production, US battery manufacturers currently source graphite almost entirely from China. They have little choice, with China controlling 91% of global graphite anode manufacturing capacity, and the US just 0.27%.

Heavily dependent on fossil carbon, graphite is also one of the largest carbon dioxide emitters in the battery raw materials market.

So how can the US create its own supply chain, while meeting decarbonization goals?

CarbonScape sustainable battery anode material technology allows for localized, fast production of high-quality, sustainable biographite, using renewable feedstocks, in a carbon negative process.

Working with commercial partners in the US, Europe and Asia, CarbonScape biographite will remove reliance on fossil fuels, mining and existing graphite supply chains.

Credit Suisse CNC2.0 is a very important opportunity for us all to contribute real solutions towards the biggest challenge we face as a global community - climate change.
